The Koi is a large carp that is a popular pond fish throughout the world. They are known for their various colours and patterns that when added to a pond, makes it lively. Koi fish nowadays are selectively bred for their specific colours and patterns and is most notable in Japan.
Koi can grow quickly and get rather large in size. They can grow up to 90cm or 3 feet in length. That is why the Koi is mostly kept in outdoor ponds where there is a lot of space to swim. They are quite hardy and known to survive in a wide range of water parameters. A large outdoor filter is recommended to keep the water clean from waste.
Koi fish are not fussy eaters and will practically eat anything that can fit into their mouth. High-quality pellets for Koi are recommended to keep their brilliant colours. A varied diet of bloodworms, shrimps, and some greens will help keep Koi fish healthy.
Fun Fact: The oldest Koi fish in the world, named Hanako, was 226 years old.
