Marimo Moss Balls are not actually moss but a species of algae (Cladophora). It does not spread like conventional algae but in turn, help combat algae growth by absorbing extra nutrients that algae use to grow. It is a perfect beginner ‘plant’ as it is nearly indestructible, can withstand any water conditions, and does not need a lot of lighting. The only ‘maintenance’ it needs are occasional flipping (to have even lighting) and sometimes a good squeeze to remove a lot of absorbed waste. The oldest known Marimo ball is about 200 years old. This plant is protected in parts of Japan and is a designated National Treasure of Japan.
