Description
Originating from Africa, these ancient fish are great if you want a large exotic fish in your tank. As these fish can grow up to 50cm, a large aquarium is needed to provide them with enough space for comfort. The addition of rocks and driftwood arranged to form caves and hiding spaces are ideal.
They are predatory fish that will eat anything that fits into its mouth, so any small peaceful community fish is not recommended to be mixed with this fish. Meaty foods such as chopped shrimp and fish will be accepted. Frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp can also be used.
It is generally peaceful towards other large or similar-sized fish but be sure to have tankmates are also peaceful. Also, be sure to have a covered tank as these fish are known to jump out of aquariums.
Fun fact: Bichirs actually have lungs as well as gills which allows it to breathe air. They can also ‘walk’ on land when needed to.
