Description
The American Flagfish or Florida Flagfish is known in the aquarium hobby as a voracious algae eater. They are kept by fish-keepers to keep their tanks clear of algae and prevent algal blooms from happening. The American Flagfish is native to Florida, USA and lives in swamps, lakes and still bodies of water. A well-planted tank setup is ideal as it provides cover in the form of plants and driftwood.
The American Flagfish can mix well in community set-up if enough space is provided. As active fish, they mix well with Danios and other Tetras in a community. They can be kept as a pair (male and female) or in a group. Though they not schooling fish, keeping a shoal of them together will help in developing more vivid colouring and encourage natural behaviours.
Omnivorous by nature, they are not fussy with food and can be fed with ordinary dried fish foods. Live can frozen foods can also be fed as a varied diet helps with better health and colouration. The American Flagfish is a known algae eater and will graze on filamentous algae that are growing in the aquarium. They should not be left to depend on algae only as their food source.
