Description
The Hampala Barb is a large fish that is native to Southeast Asia. They are found in the running rivers, streams, creeks, and swamps of the Mekong, Chao Phraya basins and as well as Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo.
When keeping this fish, a large open space is needed for them to swim as they are a large and active species. To mimic its habitat, a river-style setup can be created with variably-sized rocks and gravel, some large rocks and perhaps a couple of driftwood branches can also be added to create a more natural effect. Strong currents from powerheads can also be used to mimic a running river or stream.
They are a schooling species and should be kept in a decent-sized school of 6+. Slow-moving and shy inhabitants should be avoided as the Hampala Barb can outcompete them for food and intimidate them with their active swimming.
Feeding is rather easy as they are not fussy eaters. Commercial pellets can be given alongside variable live foods like worms, shrimps, mussels, etc. for a better healthy diet.
