Description
Mollies are native to South America, but can also be found in the waters of Asia. The Lyretail Molly is popular for its unique tail that looks like a ‘Lyre’. Their habitat includes freshwater streams and brackish coastal sea waters and swamps.
They are peaceful fish but should only be kept with other fish that can tolerate the same water conditions. Lyretail Mollies prefer more alkalic and harder waters compared to other general community fish. Tankmates can include other Molly species, some rainbowfish, and hard water tolerant barbs, and tetras.
They are omnivorous and will eat commercially available fish food. They will also eat some algae and detritus in the aquarium.
FUN FACT: A ‘Lyre’ is a U-shaped stringed musical instrument from Iran.
