Description
The Mono Sebae is a species of ‘moonyfish’ that is popular in the aquarium trade for its uniquely shaped body with a silver sheen. Their rhombus (or diamond) shaped body closely resembles the Angelfish in appearance. The Mono Sebae is native to the river mouths of Africa in mangrove roots and rocky reefs. With that said, Mono Sebaes can live in a brackish environment (water which is slightly saltwater) but can still be kept in a freshwater set-up. Other tankmates that thrive in a brackish water set-up are Mollies, Puffers, Archerfish, and the American Flagfish.
The Mono Sebae is a relatively peaceful fish but does squabble among themselves. As a schooling species, a school of 6 or more is recommended to provide security, encourage natural behaviours, and disperse aggression. Keeping them as pairs or trios will result in the weaker ones getting bullied. They are slow-moving fish so keeping them with much more active species may create competition, especially during feeding times. Do be cautious of smaller tankmates as they may become food for the Monos.
Omnivorous by nature, they feed on plant matter, insects, and small crustaceans. In the aquarium, they will accept dried fish foods but is best combined with often feedings of live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms.
