Description
Rainbow Sharks are native to the freshwater river basins of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. They are fishes with a slender, dark grey body and distinctive red fins. Their upright dorsal fins give them the appearance of a shark, hence its name. Its habitat includes streams and rivers with sandy and rocky substrate. A well-planted aquarium with driftwood and rocks should be sufficient to keep them happy and comfortable in an aquarium.
They are territorial fish and should be kept with caution in a community tank. When young, they will hide away most of the time but as they grow, they get increasingly territorial and will display aggression. They are active swimmers and spends most of their time at the bottom of the tank. Be sure to provide enough space for them and avoid adding other bottom-dwelling fishes such as Loaches and Corydoras as they will be attacked. They are solitary fish and should be kept by themselves and not with a school.
In nature, Rainbow Sharks scour the bottom of rivers and streams for small crustaceans and insect larvae. In captivity, they will scavenge for leftover food and algae. They can be given live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms. Commercially available fish foods can also be given (make sure it is the sinking type).
FUN FACT: Despite their name, Rainbow Sharks are not true sharks. They are just named “Sharks” because their appearance makes them look like one.
