Description
The Ranchu Goldfish is a chubby looking Goldfish that lacks a dorsal fin. Their lack of a dorsal fin contributes to their restrictive swimming, making them waddle in the water compared to other fishes with one. Ranchus do resemble a lot like the Lionhead Goldfish but are more rounded and egg-shaped with the addition of a hood.
Ranchus are not recommended for beginners due to their delicateness. They are prone to diseases when not taken care of properly. Their handicap of swimming prohibits them from swimming very fast so other fast tankmates are not recommended to be mixed with them or else they become a competition for food. They are social fish and should be in a school of two or more of their own kind. As for any Goldfish, they have a very large bioload because of their simple digestion so adequate filtration is needed.
They can be fed with commercially available flakes or pellet foods for Goldfish. Live food is also a good source of protein in the form of bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. Ranchus may take a little bit more time to feed due to their handicapped swimming and poor eyesight.
FUN FACT: Ranchus are a very prized fish in Asia and is often entered into highly competitive competitions for their quality.
