Description
The Reed Fish (also known as Ropefish or Snake Fish) is a long fish that resembles an eel at first sight. They originate from Western Africa and has been collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Benin. Their habitat includes shallow and heavily planted waters. A set-up that is heavily planted with a soft substrate and pieces of driftwood forming hiding places is ideal for this fish. They are also very good jumpers and is recommended to have a lid on the tank.
It is relatively peaceful but will eat any of its tankmates small enough to fit into its mouth. It is not territorial and can be kept in small groups. They have very bad eyesight and rely on their senses to find food. In this case, they will be outcompeted by vigorous and active eaters if mixed with.
They are carnivorous and should be fed live or frozen foods like bloodworms, shrimp, and earthworms. They will not usually accept dried foods in aquaria, though some specimens have been known to take pelleted varieties.
FUN FACT: They are closely related to Bichirs and have been living on Earth since the early dinosaur age. They can breathe air and walk on land too, just like the first dinosaurs that evolved from fishes.
