Description
Looking for a bright and colourful fish for your aquarium? The Ram Cichlid is a great choice for its amazing colours of blues and yellows across their body. More commonly known as the German Blue Ram, this dwarf cichlid, compared to many other cichlids in the hobby, has a rather mellow temperament and is great for a community set-up. They are native to the many flooded plains of South America with a habitat consisting of fallen roots and branches and a sandy substrate. As an unfussy species, a planted tank set-up will suffice. A much more natural set-up will be a blackwater set-up consisting of dark waters, leaf litter, and branches or driftwood.
The Ram Cichlid is more suited for an experienced fish-keeper due to its fragility. They require pristine waters and is a poor competitor among more active tank mates. With that in mind, smaller and more peaceful species can mix well with the Rams such as Chilli Rasboras and Neon Tetras. Smaller schooling species are used as an indicator that the area is clear of any threats. Avoid aggressive and territorial tank mates as this could spell disaster for the Rams.
For their feeding habits, they inhabit an interesting way of foraging for food. They would take a mouthful of substrate and sift through it for anything edible. The remaining substrate will then be expelled from their gills and mouth. Though this is a natural behaviour, normal food feedings of dried fish foods will work just fine. These Rams are carnivorous and will need regular feedings of live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, or bloodworms.
FUN FACT: The Balloon Ramirezi is a variant of the German Blue Ram which has a rounder body due to selective breeding.
