Description
The Black Ghost Knife Fish is a very unique fish to have for hobbyists and will definitely be a conversation starter. It does not have any scales or fins and its tail looks like a rod, which gives it an unusual look compared to other fishes in the tank. They originate throughout the Amazon River and their habitat includes a lot of vegetation, rocks, and woods as hiding spaces. An aquarium set-up with a lot of hiding spaces is recommended as they are shy fish. A soft, fine substrate is also recommended as they do not have any scales on their body and may hurt themselves from jagged edges.
Despite being semi-aggressive, they can be added into a peaceful community tank with a lot of hiding spaces. They will only start to become aggressive if they are limited to small spaces and if they don’t have enough hiding spots. Small shrimps and snails are not recommended to be added as they will be eaten during the night hours. It is also not recommended to be kept with other aggressive fish or fish that are small enough to be eaten.
They are a carnivorous species and eats insect larvae, worms, and small fish in the wild. They can be fed frozen and live foods like bloodworms, shrimps, and crickets.
FUN FACT: Black Ghost Knife Fish, like many eels, have an electro-sensory system used for location detection and communication. They are also known to be trained to eat foods straight from their owner’s hands.
