Description
The Black Skirt Tetra originates from the small, slow-moving creeks of South America. They are a type of Tetra with recognisable black stripes and fins. Their name comes from their wide anal fins which gives them the appearance of having a skirt. Their habitat includes dense vegetation and slow-moving waters. They are not fussy with decorations in the tank and prefers plenty of open swimming spaces. Adding plenty of plants will allow them to show off their best colours. Floating plants will also provide some cover so that they feel secure.
They are peaceful fish and can be mixed in a peaceful community tank. It does have a reputation of being a fin-nipper but this habit can be suppressed by keeping them in a small school of 6-8 or more. By keeping them in a school, any fights can be contained only in their group.
They are an unfussy omnivorous species and will accept most commercially available fish food. Giving live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms are recommended.
