Description
As its name goes, The Blind Cave Tetra is a fish with a lack of eyes; making this fish very special. This feature has developed during ages spent in dark caves found in deep waters, where eyesight is basically useless. They originate from the underground caves and caverns of Mexico. When setting up a tank, the Blind Cave Tetra does not require any specific decor, plants, or form of cover as they are blind. With that said, it can live in different types of set-ups as long as its parameters are matched. Similarly, a cave style set-up with a lot of rocks and a dark substrate will create a much more natural feel.
The Blind Cave Tetra is a peaceful, hardy species and is a great choice for beginners. They are active swimmers, making them an interesting sight as they try to explore their surroundings without sight. It sometimes nips other fish when feeding, but this is due to them searching for food instead of it being aggressive. Although with the lack of eyesight, they seem to do better when kept in a group of at least 4-6.
They are omnivorous and will accept commercially available fish foods alongside plenty of small live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms. Although blind, they are still able to feed just like any other fish.
FUN FACT: Fry of the Blind Cave Tetra actually hatch with fully developed eyes, which degenerate and are reabsorbed during the first few weeks of life.
