Description
The Flame Tetra gets its name from its fiery red colours when it feels comfortable in an aquarium. They are native to the small shallow streams throughout South America in a habitat containing plenty of submerged vegetation, clear, transparent to brownish water, and sandy substrates. When setting up a tank, a planted tank set-up helps with better colouration with the addition of roots or driftwood for a more natural look. A blackwater biotope is another option to have to mimic their natural habitat. This species thrives better under dim lighting and clean environments.
They are a very peaceful species and mixes well with other community fish. As schooling fish, they are best kept in a school of at least 8-10 or more. This will encourage more natural behaviours and better colouring s they compete for female attention.
Flame Tetras are omnivorous, feeding on small insects, shrimps, algae, and organic detritus in nature. In captivity, they will accept dried fish foods but will do best on a varied diet containing live or frozen foods like Artemia, Daphnia, or bloodworms.
