Description
The Golden Barb is native to the slow-moving waters throughout Asia (Vietnam, Taiwan, southwestern China, and northern Laos). Their habitat includes swamps and near irrigation channels with dense areas of dense aquatic vegetation. A well-planted setup will be best for them with the addition of floating plants and driftwood or branches.
They are generally peaceful and will do well in a well-researched community tank. The Golden Barb is also a hardy species and is great for beginner aquarists. As a schooling species, it is best to keep them in a school of 8-10 or more. This will provide them with security and also produce a more natural-looking behaviour. Males will also compete with each other for the female’s attention with brighter colours and interesting behaviour.
They are omnivorous and feeds on algae, organic matter, small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton in nature. In the aquarium, they can be fed with a commercial flake or pellet fish food but will do best if fed live or frozen foods like bloodworms, Artemia, and Daphnia.
FUN FACT: The ‘Golden Barb’ is selectively bred for the aquarium hobby and is not found naturally in the wild. The wild variant is actually green in colour.
