Description
The Hillstream Loach is native to the rivers and shallow pools of Vietnam. Their habitat includes fast-flowing clear waters that are highly oxygenated and is decorated with rocks and sand/gravel as a substrate. In an aquarium, they prefer waters that are clean and well-oxygenated. Driftwood can be used but avoid ones that can leach tannins, causing the water to turn dark. Hillstream Loaches rely on light to grow biofilm and algae to graze on. The tank can be decorated with rocks too to simulate a river habitat.
Hillstream Loaches can be mixed in a community aquarium with other large and active community species. They’re territorial to an extent with some individuals more protective of their space than others. To reduce aggression, they should be kept in a small group of 4-6. A sufficient amount of space should also be provided so that they are comfortable. A lid is recommended as they are very good jumpers and can climb glass.
They are omnivorous but generally consumes algae and biofilm that grows in the tank. This is why it is not a suitable fish for newer tanks as they are not mature enough to grow out algae and biofilm for them to graze on. Sinking foods like algae wafers are good supplement foods for them.
