Description
The Odessa Barb is one of the lesser-known Barb species in the hobby but is a great addition for its bright colours. They originate from central Myanmar in small ponds and rivers. Their habitats consist of clear waters, a lack of aquatic plants, gravel, and a lot of rocks. This creates an environment that is alkalic with a high pH value in the wild. A river set-up can mimic its natural habitat but Odessa Barbs can also thrive in planted set-ups too. The addition of some floating plants and driftwood roots or branches adds a more natural feel to the setup.
Odessa Barbs are generally peaceful and can mix well in a well-researched community tank. They are schooling fish and should be kept in a school of at least 8-10. Keeping too few will result in them being semi-aggressive and will nip the fins of other fish. They are quite hardy and is a great beginner fish for those who like active and colourful fish.
Being omnivorous, they feed on worms, insects and other small invertebrates, as well as plant matter in the wild. They will accept commercially available fish foods but will do best with a diet of live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, or bloodworms which helps with better colouration.
