Description
The Paradise Gourami (or Paradise Fish) is a popular fish for its beautiful red and blue patterns but does come with rather aggressive behaviour. Paradise Gouramis are native to the streams, natural ponds, and rice paddies throughout Asia. When setting up a tank, a heavily planted set-up is recommended with decorations like driftwood and floating plants. A blackwater set-up can also be done to mimic its natural habitat.
The Paradise Gourami is one of the most aggressive in the Gourami species, its behaviour almost similar to a Betta. Males are territorial and aggressive and will chase off similarly looking fish in the tank. It is best housed singularly or in a large tank with smaller, peaceful schooling fish. When comfortable, it will create a ‘bubble nest’ in the tank, similar to a Betta.
Paradise Gouramis are omnivorous and prey on insect larvae and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they will accept dried fish food but will do best with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, Artemia, and Daphnia to help with their already beautiful colours and patterns.
