Description
The Red Hook Pacu gets its name from their anal fin that looks like a red hook. They are native to the slow-moving throughout South America in a habitat with a lot of overhanging vegetation. When setting up a tank, a planted tank set-up will be the best for them as it mimics their natural habitat. On the other hand, they are also avid plant eaters and will eat plants in the tank. Hardy plants like Java Ferns and Anubias are great choices to minimise damage. Artificial plants can also be used as an alternative. Adding driftwood provide hiding spaces as they are a shy species.
Red Hooks are generally peaceful fish and can mix with other larger peaceful species. Much smaller fish is best avoided to prevent them from being eaten. They are schooling fish and is best kept in a school of 5-6+ to encourage more natural behaviours.
Omnivorous by nature but are primarily herbivorous species. When getting dried fish food, make sure the food has vegetable matter or algae. Vegetables like cucumbers, peas, and leafy vegetables can also be given. occasional feedings of live and frozen foods like bloodworms and Artemia can also be given.
FUN FACT: The Red Hook Pacu is closely related to Piranhas but is herbivorous instead of carnivorous.
