Description
The Oscar is a popular fish to have for experienced fish keepers for their appearance, colours, and intelligent social behaviour. These large fish are widely distributed in the river systems of the Amazon region. They are found in the shallows of slow-moving or still waters in forested areas with a lot of submerged tree roots and marginal vegetation. When setting up the tank, plants should be kept at a minimum due to this fish having a tendency to dig in the substrate. A river set-up with a soft, sandy substrate, relatively dim lighting plus some large driftwood roots and branches will be great. A large space should be provided as they can grow very large (up to 35cm).
Oscars are known to be aggressive fish, but they are able to mix with other fish that are of the same size. Smaller fish should be avoided as to not become food for the Oscar. Good tankmates can be other large catfish or plecos. Hobbyists keep them for their interactive and intelligent temperament. They can actually get to know their owners and even eat from their hand.
Oscars are omnivorous and will eat almost anything given to them. From small fish, insects, and vegetables; they will accept them all. They will also accept commercially available fish food but will do best with high protein foods like bloodworms to keep their colouration bright.
FUN FACT: The Oscars are also called “river dog” or “water dog” because of the way they interact with their owners. They shake their tail and head just like dogs do, which is the reason people fall quickly in love with them.
