Description
The Siamese Algae Eater originates from Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, southern and western Thailand, and possibly southern Myanmar. Their habitat includes clear, flowing shallow streams with a lot of boulders, rocks and fallen tree branches. They are a popular fish in the hobby for their ability to clean up algae growth in the aquarium. They do well in aquariums set-ups that resemble a flowing river or stream. Decorations of rocks and boulders are recommended with the addition of driftwood.
They are a generally peaceful species and can mix well in a peaceful community setup. They are not schooling fish but they stay in groups. They are best kept in groups of 6 or more as weaker individuals may be bullied if numbers are too little. Being in a shoal will encourage a much more natural behaviour as they interact with each other.
These fish are herbivorous and will feed on algae and biofilm that grow in the aquarium naturally. They are famed to eat ‘Black Brush Algae’ (BBA), also known as ‘Beard Algae’ which are very hard to remove once established. Sinking algae wafers should also be provided as food. Shelled peas, blanched spinach, and chopped fruit all make good additions to the menu too.
NOTE: They cannot metabolise proteins and regular prolonged feeding of it will result in excessive fats and organ degeneration.
