Description
The Silver Arowana is a popular fish in the hobby for its beautiful silver scales and large size. Silver Arowanas are native to the flooded forests of the Amazon basin in Brazil which has slow-moving waters. When setting up the tank, space is important to keep this large fish happy. A minimal set-up of branches and floating plants will do but a bare tank can also be an option. Be sure to have a heavy or tight lid on the tank because Arowanas are naturally very good jumpers. Heavy filtration and air pumps should also be included in this setup.
They are peaceful but only towards other large peaceful fish and can stay in a community when tankmates are chosen with care. Any fish that can fit into its mouth will become a meal for it. They are aggressively territorial and very competitive when it comes to food. Silver Arowanas prefer to stay at the surface and will be aggressive towards other top dwellers or Arowanas. With the amount of care needed for this fish, it is not recommended for beginners.
They are predators in the wild and eats smaller fish, insects, crabs, and shrimps. In captivity, they can be fed with bloodworms, earthworms, chopped prawns, and crickets. Avoid feeding ‘live feeder fish’ as there are few nutritional benefits and may risk giving parasites or diseases to the Arowana.
