Description
Guppies are one of the most popular fishes in the hobby and are instantly recognisable by people all over the world, even those who aren’t into the aquarium hobby. They come in many different patterns and colours due to selective breeding and are sometimes entered into contests if their quality is good enough. They are mainly popular due to the patterns and colours they produce and looks gorgeous in an aquarium. They are best kept in heavily planted community aquariums or ponds. The more plants provided the better.
Guppies are known as livebearer fish and can reproduce really fast. 5-100 fry can be produced by a single female. It is best to keep more females than males as the males will compete with each other to find a mate, in turn stressing them out. A large amount of vegetation in the aquarium is needed for the fish fry to hide in to ensure their survival.
Guppies are omnivorous and will accept commercially available fish food and can also be fed frozen and live foods.
NOTE: Do not mix guppies with fin-nipping fish like the Tiger Barb as their long flowing tails will attract attention. Unfortunately, many Guppies nowadays are not very hardy due to inbreeding and over-production due to demand. This causes the Guppies to be easily prone to diseases and have premature deaths.
