Description
Cherry Barbs are brightly coloured fish and one of the most popular in their family. They are popular for their bright red colours and schooling nature, which makes for a pretty sight in the aquarium. They are native to Sri Lanka where it is restricted to the Kelani and Nilwala river basins. Their habitat includes pristine streams containing clear or slightly-stained, shallow water with dense or marginal vegetation. A heavily planted set-up with the addition of some floating plants, driftwood or branches, and leaf litter also seems to be appreciated and adds a more natural feel.
They are very peaceful and can be mixed in a well-researched community aquarium. They are a schooling species and should be kept in a school of 8-10 or more. This will help them feel less nervous and display more natural behaviour and colours. They can be mixed with tank mates such as other tetras, livebearers, rainbowfishes, gouramis, and loaches.
They are omnivorous and feed on diatoms, algae, organic detritus, small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton in the wild. They will accept commercially available fish food but will do best with live or frozen food such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms for better colouration.
