Description
The Mosquito Rasbora is native to the tropical forest swamps and waterways found in Borneo, Indonesia. Their natural habitat is in blackwater streams and pools that are tinted dark brown from the tannin released from decaying organic matter. Due to their small size, a densely planted tank would benefit them greatly as it would provide them with a lot of covers. A set-up providing a lot of cover from plants or driftwood is recommended. A natural blackwater set-up will also greatly benefit them as they prefer the acidic nature of the water.
They are very peaceful but do not make an ideal community fish due to their very small size and timid nature. They do best by themselves or have other small tankmates like shrimps. They are a schooling species by nature and should be kept in a group of at least 8-10. This will not only make the fish less nervous but will result in a more effective, natural-looking display. Males will also display their best colours and some interesting behaviour as they compete with one another for female attention.
They are carnivorous micro predators in the wild, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. They will accept dried fish foods but make sure it is suitable for their size. Daily meals of Daphnia or Artemia will encourage them to have the best colouration.
