Description
The Climbing Perch or ‘Ikan Puyu’ is an interesting fish for fishkeepers to have. They are not very popular in the aquarium trade but is undoubtedly interesting fish for their ability to be able to breathe out of water. They are found in almost all parts of Asia such as countries like India, China, Malaysia, and Thailand. Their habitat includes swamps, marshes, lakes, canals, pools, small pits, rice paddies, puddles, oxbows, tributaries and main river channels. They can also be found in brackish waters (saltwater and freshwater mix) in some areas. A set-up with a lot of hiding spaces is recommended to provide comfort. The most favoured set-ups tend to feature relatively dim lighting plus some chunks of driftwood, and scattered roots/branches.
They are not suitable for general community aquariums as they are large and predatory fish. Smaller fish will be eaten if given the opportunity. It is not recommended to be kept in groups as they are territorial and will bully and eventually kill the weakest of their group if enough space is not provided. Tankmates can include larger and more active fish like Tinfoil Barbs, Hampala Barbs, and Pacus. Be sure to have a tight-fitting lid on your aquarium as they are very good jumpers.
They are predatory fish in the wild and hunts for smaller fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates. They will apparently feed on algae and vegetative matter too. It is best to provide live or frozen foods like bloodworms, earthworms, shellfish, and shrimp to their diet. Commercial fish foods like pellets can also be given.
FUN FACT: The Climbing Perch has the ability to ‘walk’ to another body of water during droughts or when finding another hunting spot. They are able to breathe air due to an organ in their gill called the ‘Labyrinth Organ’ that stores air.
