Description
The Golden Algae Eater or more commonly known as Chinese Algae Eater is widely distributed in the river basins of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Their habitat includes flowing streams with substrates of boulders, pebbles, gravel and sand, often in areas with submerged driftwood or tree roots. The clear shallow waters that it inhabits allow sunlight to penetrate the surface which develops a rich biofilm covering submerged surfaces upon which the fish grazes. A set-up that resembles a flowing river will be best for them with a substrate of variably sized rocks with driftwoods and branches for decor. Plants like Java Ferns and Anubias are best kept with this fish.
Although commonly sold, this fish is not suitable for a peaceful community aquarium. Tankmates must be chosen with care when mixing with this fish. While the fish is still young and small, they will hide away frequently. As they grow, they become increasingly territorial and can display particularly high levels of aggression towards similar-looking fishes. Other bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras should not be mixed in. Recommended tank mates are other active fish like Danios and Barbs.
They are primarily an algae eater and eats algae and biofilm off surfaces in the tank. They can also be given live and frozen foods like bloodworms. Sinking fish foods will also be accepted by them.
NOTE: These fish are commonly bought without considering their temperament, eventual size, and their lifespan (15 years). Young Algae Eaters will be active in cleaning off algae in the aquarium but as it becomes an adult, it slows down in this process.
