Description
The Golden Pencil is a great addition to a community tank setup due to its peaceful temperament and colours. Native throughout South America, these fish inhabit swamps, small rivers, and areas with fallen branches, trunks, and leaf litter. Setting up a tank for them is not too hard, a well-planted tank will suffice with decorations of driftwood. A more natural set-up is blackwater, which has darker waters, leaf litter, and branches as decorations.
Their peaceful temperament makes them a great addition to other small peaceful species in the tank. Though their small size makes them a rather poor competitor especially with other active species. As schooling fish, they are best kept in a school of more than 10. Being in a school encourages natural behaviours, provide security, and enhance colouration.
Chiefly carnivorous in nature, they feed on zooplankton, small insects, worms, and crustaceans. In captivity, they will accept dried foods of acceptable size. Due to their small mouths, smaller foods such as micropellets are recommended. Regular feedings of live and frozen foods like Artemia and Daphnia helps maintain their health in the tank.
