Description
The Tiger Barb is a very popular fish in the aquarium hobby. Their active nature, colours, patterns make it an ideal fish for hobbyists who wants more life in their tanks. Tiger Barbs originate from the forest streams of central and southern Sumatra, with records from Borneo. Their habitat includes clear waters with a substrate of sand and rocks of various sizes. When setting up a tank, a planted set-up is ideal with the addition of driftwood and rocks.
Tiger Barbs are well known for biting the fins of other fish but will only do so when they are in small numbers. To prevent aggression, they should be kept in a school of 8-10 as a minimum. This will allow the fish to be distracted by each other instead of going for other fish. As active fish, they do not make an ideal tank mate for timid, slow-moving, or long-finned species. Optional tank mates will be fast and active fish like other types of Tiger Barbs, Danios, Loaches, or catfish.
They are omnivorous and will actively accept commercially available fish food. Live or frozen foods like Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms are recommended as they will help them display better colours.
