Description
The Harlequin Rasbora is one of the most popular fish to have in the hobby for its fun schooling nature and striking colours. They are native to Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Singapore, and the Greater Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Their habitat includes rivers, streams, and swamp forests which resemble blackwater habitats. A densely planted aquarium set-up will be enough but a more natural set-up would have a soft, sandy substrate with wood roots and branches placed in such a way that plenty of shady spots and caves are formed. A blackwater set-up would also benefit them with the addition of dried leaf litter would further emphasise the natural feel.
They are a very peaceful species and can be mixed into a peaceful community tank. They are also a great beginner fish for those starting out in the hobby. They are a schooling species and should be kept in a school of at least 8-10 or more. Keeping them in a school will make them less nervous and will result in a more effective, natural-looking display. Males will also display their best colours as they compete with one other for female attention.
They are micro predators in the wild feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans and other zooplankton. In the aquarium, they will accept commercially available fish food and will benefit more from live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms, which helps enhance their colours.
