Description
The Dwarf Algae Eater or most commonly known as the Otocinclus Catfish is known to be one of the best algae eaters to have in an aquarium. Algae is their natural foods and will actively go around grazing on it. They originate from the small streams and shallow rivers across South America which has a habitat that consists of slow-moving waters, soft sandy substrate, rocks, and wood. These species thrive in areas that have a lot of sunlight as it can help grow out a lot of algae, which they will feed on. A river-style tank setup is ideal for this species. Dwarf Algae Eaters mostly stay at the bottom of the tank, so setting up the lower levels of the tank correctly is crucial. Rocks, woods, soft substrate, and hardy plants like Anubias will provide a comfortable environment.
They are a peaceful species and tends to stay out of the way of other fish. They are skittish and easily scared as they are small and can be eaten by larger fish. They can be kept in groups and will graze together for algae at the bottom of the aquarium or latch on to surfaces like rocks, woods, plants, and the tank wall.
They are herbivorous and eats mostly algae in the wild. They will eat algae that form in the tank but they still need to be fed with other foods too. Sinking algae wafers can be given once every couple of days. Fruits and leafy vegetables can also be given such as cucumbers, zucchinis, spinach and lettuce.
