Description
Discus fish is one of the most beautiful freshwater fish available for the home aquarium. Because of this, experienced aquarists have kept this fish as one of their most prized fish. The Discus is native to the Amazon Basin of South America and lives in slow-moving waters and forest pools which are decorated with plenty of tree roots and rocks. When setting up a tank, a heavily planted set-up will be beneficial for them to provide plenty of covers. Driftwood will also provide a more natural feel to the tank. The tank should have a heater as this fish prefers warmer waters compared to most fish.
Discus are very peaceful and will try to avoid any conflict. They are very shy, skittish fish and require as much cover as possible to feel comfortable. They are schooling fish and is best kept in a school of 6-8 so that they feel more secure and comfortable. What makes these fish so appealing is that they come in different colours like blue, orange, and red; with the added bonus of beautiful patterns on their body. Be careful though, any stress can cause the Discus to lose its colours and turn black or pale. Some tank mates that will go well with them are small or slow peaceful fish like Neon Tetras and peaceful Gouramis. Bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras are also perfect.
Discus are omnivorous and primarily eat green plant matter such as algae or insects in the wild. To keep their colouration, a variety of foods should be given to them such as spirulina, algae pellets, bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Artemia, and Daphnia will help.
