Description
The Giant Red-Tailed Gourami is a beautiful large fish and is quite rare in the aquarium hobby. Obtaining one will make it a showpiece fish in a large community aquarium. They are native to the slow-moving rivers and stagnant waters of Malaysia and Indonesia. When setting up a tank, a river set-up with rocks, large pieces of wood, and pebbles would make a very natural looking environment. Adding plants is not necessary as they might eat them up. Powerful filtration and plenty of swimming space are needed because this is a big messy fish.
Giant Red-Tailed Gouramis are generally peaceful with other large fish but will eat smaller fish. There are reports of them living together with small Tetras and Barbs but this is due to conditioning when they were still young. Adults that get aggressive are usually due to being kept in an aquarium that is too small. They have a tendency to be territorial and are not reliably gentle with more delicate tank mates. The minimum tank size for this fish is at least 680l or 180gal. Good tankmates include Oscars, knifefish, other large catfish, and plecos. They are generally loners and do not need other Giant Red-Tailed Gouramis as companions.
Omnivorous and unfussy when it comes to feeding. In the wild, they will eat aquatic algae as well as fish, crustaceans, frogs, worms, and even dead meat. They will accept commercially dried fish foods, vegetables, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, which can help enhance their colours.
