Description
The Kuhli Loach is a unique and small eel-like fish that is sure to be a great bottom-dwelling and scavenging fish in a tank. They are native to the shallow, slow-moving streams of Peninsular Malaysia and the Great Sunda Islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Their habitat includes shallow, slow-moving sections of forest streams or other calm habitats such as swamps, oxbows, and blackwaters with the addition of marginal vegetation. A planted tank set up with a sandy substrate as they like to burrow themselves under the sand. Coarser gravel may cause stress and damage their skin. A blackwater set-up is also recommended as they prefer much more acidic waters.
They are very peaceful and can be mixed in a peaceful community setup. In the wild, they are found packed in small areas as a group. It is recommended to keep them in a small group of 6-8 as they feel much more secure. Do provide plenty of hiding spaces in terms of rocks and driftwood. They hide during the day and is more active at night, generally foraging for food.
In nature, they are micro predators and eats insect larvae and small crustaceans with the addition of plant matter. They will accept dried sinking foods but should also be offered regular meals of live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms.
